A Girl In The Plains

Burgos! What a beautiful city! Once a very wealthy and powerful city, it now still thrives in the remains of its glory days. I took a rest day there and spent two nights. Could have easily spent more days there absorbing its beauty and enjoying a sangria or two.

Below is a few pictures from the cathedral in Burgos. It took my breath away when I first saw it. They started building this cathedral nearly 800 years ago and it took 500 years to complete it. The elaborate details and fine craftsmanship naturally drew my heart to worship God.

Today I entered a section of Spain called the Meseta. It reminds me of the plains of the U.S. It’s not an obvious beauty like the Pyrenees or the wine region of Rioja, but there is something undeniable in its understated beauty. Having grown up in Nebraska, I didn’t appreciate the plains until I started to read Willa Cather. She helped me have eyes to see this wild, vast stretch of grass and sky brimming with life and thought and love. I’ve heard many say that it is this stretch of the Camino that many go introspective and experience thoughts of significance. I don’t know if that will be my experience…but I know as I walk through these fields of grain and grass I can thank our Creator for the plains and the Meseta.

Ok, going to race off to sleep now. There is a kind man sleeping in the bunk next to mine and he snores very loudly. I know having slept near him in a previous albergue that it is good to fall asleep before he does. 😉

Buen Camino, my friends!
